New Procedure for Donating Stock

For donations from an employer’s stock purchase plan…
Please send a completed copy of the attached Letter of Authorization (LOA) to The Collins Group at MSSB. Please ensure the “Employer’s Stock Purchase Plan” box is checked. Once the LOA is received by The Collins Group at MSSB, they will have the appropriate shares transferred from the Global Stock Plan Services Group to the LDS Church’s MSSB account in 2 to 4 business days. Same day transactions are not possible.
The Collins Group at MSSB will use the information on the LOA to “Log” your donation with Church headquarters. “Logging” your donation will ensure the donation is allocated to the appropriate category/program within the Church. It will also ensure the Church has the correct address on file so a tax-valid donation receipt can be sent (which takes generally 4 to 6 weeks). Your receipt will not show a total dollar value, but will contain the number of shares, name of stock, and date of donation. To determine the dollar amount of the donation, please consult with your tax advisor.

F.Y.I., when you receive your tax-valid receipt from LDS (usually 1-4 weeks after the date of transfer), it will not state a total value for your donation (per IRS rules). However, for valuation purposes, the IRS and the Church average the high and low price on the date of donation. You should be able to obtain this information from the historical prices of your stock on any financial website. In addition, the records of your stock donation are kept with our office. The only receipt you receive will be from us (in paper form only). Your ward or bishop will not be notified of these types of stocks donations.
